The Icy Land Called Antarctica
Friday, March 12th, 2010
Antarctica is a land of immense beauty that is only topped by it harsh living. War has never touched this pristine continent, keeping it pure. However, this continent, with a land mass larger than America and Europe together, has been the scene of more violent deaths than natural ones, due to continuous low temperatures which keep it practically free of any germs.
The contrast in the living environment is remarkable. Hostile political forces work together without conflict in a warm environment, while outside the 100 below zero temperatures could very quickly freeze their blood. In Antarctica people are able to eat four hearty meals each day and never gain an ounce because the extreme cold uses more calories than could be cut out using any diet.
During the summer months, Antarctica is bathed in endless sunlight, which gives way to what is known as the “big eye”, an insomnia condition that plagues most residents, as they struggle to sleep in the bright light of day. Bombastically the people who live in the Antarctic claim the rights to being part of the 300 Degree Club. At the South Pole, on the continent of Antarctica, lies the least expensive, southernmost bar on the globe where residents can drink cognac, 12-year-old scotch, or beer for the same price, but the nightly bar tab can still grow to an enormous amount. The nights are extremely long between the months of April and September.
At the heart of Antarctica, there’s a mobile ice shield that’s 9,000 feet across, which contains a rich deposit of coal, gas and oil that could be very useful. Its laws, or lack thereof, are so strange that a fugitive could not be extradited and any criminal has almost nine million square miles of terrain ranging from open spaces to mountain ranges in which to conceal himself, should he be fortunate enough to survive more than a couple of hours in the most adverse climate known on earth.
Even so, Antarctica has the smallest crime rate of any country or nation out there. Even if a crime did happen, such as a murder, it was never reported or prosecuted. Leaving a lot of mystery behind what may or could happen here. No international laws or treaties are in place to stop a murderer, anywhere on this vast land.
Ten nations are flying their colors over the Antarctic and yet none lays claim to a single foot of the actual real estate. No effort to establish a long term colony in this primitive land has yet been mounted, and even so, the South Pole is home to the most complex scientific instrumentation and computers.
The smartest people in the world reside there, though not for long periods of time. In no other continent will you find more people with degrees than a high school education. No greater amount of scientific cooperation can be found anywhere else in the world, and it houses the best minds on Earth. Antarctica is the only land which prohibits the detonation of nuclear bombs.
It has the most stringent environmental protection of all the land masses. Whaling and sealing are regulated there now, people seeking those trades requiring licenses to even be in those waters. Present day Antarctica is the playground of the world’s top scientists who are strenuously involved in keeping it pristine.
