Build or buy, new or used?

Friday, November 10th, 2006

After looking around for a few days and not finding anything suitable, most new buyers begin to wonder - rather than looking to buy an existing house, wouldn’t it make more sense to build your own? You can have the design to your convenience and needs, it might be cheaper, and you don’t seem to be finding a suitable alternative anyway.

Here again, no right answers. Buying an existing house usually offers the greatest personal convenience; the location would be well developed, with amenities at hand; Fittings, furnishings and garden reasonably complete, barring any repairs; and the possibility of moving in almost immediately.

Building your own requires considerable effort; even with all construction being contracted out, you still need to get involved to supervise, and provide details of what you’d like to have; Design & layout, colors, fittings and furnishings. It can take upto a year or more, to get everything done to your liking.

Buying into a new development is an in-between; you choose from among the standard designs, with some option to customize. It involves lesser effort than the build-your-own option, but there’s still some.

Whichever you choose, don’t rush into the decision. Sometimes, you walk into an opportunity, and something immediately clicks; “This is my home”. If that happens, you’re lucky. If not, you might be better off waiting.
