What’s the point, anyway?

Making a budget for the first time has got to be one of the most depressing activities ever. Unless you’re fortunate enough to have a huge income and minimal expenses, chances are you’ll find that you don’t make enough money!
It isn’t uncommon - there just are too many things that all of us like; and most of them cost money! A nice home, good clothes, hobbies and entertainment, food and transportation, evenings with the boys (or girls) - the list just goes on and on. Not to mention past commitments like college debt, or last year’s vacation that hasn’t yet been paid off.
Even when the budget does show a reasonable surplus, try living according to that. Chances are, there’s a bunch of expenses you wouldn’t have remembered. Not to mention the unexpected - the sale at the superstore, parties and weddings where gifts are de rigeur, the car breakdown with a huge mechanic’s bill ….
This is where most people give up. What’s the point trying to make a budget, when things don’t work that way?
