Tomorrow will be better!

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

It’s quite natural for most of us to be optimists; the feeling that even when things aren’t too good, they will improve later. Not to mention that when things are good, the feeling is always “Tomorrow will be better”. You hear it all the time - “Next month, I’m due for a bonus!” or “I’ll get a raise at the end of the year”.

For a freshman out of college, this seems to be literally true - after years of slaving on a pittance, the first job with money in the pockets seems to be the path to a huge fortune. And as everyone knows - once you have some work experience, opportunities come your way. It isn’t like pounding doors while at college, trying to find that elusive break.

This isn’t to suggest that you should become a pessimist, or continue scrimping in the same way. You can and should reward yourself - after all, life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

But the key is to remember - it’s easy to go up the lifestyle ladder, and very difficult to move back down. Public transport and takeaway meals don’t appeal once you’ve got wheels, and a sampling of fine dining. And the hole in the corner attic that was home for years becomes a slum that you wouldn’t want to be caught dead in.

And if bad luck strikes, that’s when the down side of an expensive lifestyle pinches. The youngest, newest employees are usually the first for the chopping block, when business does badly - they’re the most dispensable. And all businesses do go through cycles of up and down.

Starting tomorrow, let’s talk through ways to keep afloat through any bad patches, and how to minimise the likelihood of these happening.
